Most fruit emojis just mean the fruit. A few have picked up slang meanings, mainly the banana, the peach and the pineapple. This guide covers each one, using our own pages and guides from Cosmopolitan, wikiHow, Dash Social and others.
π Strawberry
Sweet, cute and girly, according to wikiHow. FamiSafe's guide says teens sometimes use it to say they're single, which is a regional, in-group habit rather than a standard meaning. Otherwise it is smoothies, desserts and summer. See the strawberry page.
π Banana
The fruit, snacks and "going bananas" (going wild). It is also widely used as a suggestive innuendo because of its shape, and parent guides such as Findmykids flag it as NSFW slang. In a chat about food it is only a banana, and in a flirty chat it is not. See the banana page.
π Pineapple
- Tropical and welcoming. Holidays, cocktails and hospitality.
- Complicated relationship. Wikipedia's entry notes it can mean "complicated relationship status" in texting or social media.
- Swinger code (upside-down). Cosmopolitan and Men's Health say an upside-down pineapple is a subtle signal that someone is a swinger or open to swinging. The top-rated answers on our pineapple page say the same. A plain, upright pineapple is only a fruit, so don't read too much into it.
π Grapes
Dash Social says the grape emoji simply represents grapes and is often used for charcuterie or wine, so wine nights and parties. The New York Post's guide mentions an innuendo reading for grapes, but it is much less common. See the grapes page.
π Peach
A fruit, but very often slang for a bum. See our full guide on the peach emoji and what it means when a guy sends it.
π Green apple
Health, school and sour flavour. See the green apple page.
How to tell if a fruit emoji is slang
- It appears in a flirty or private chat rather than about food.
- It is paired with a smirk π, a wink π or an eggplant π.
- The sender has no reason to be talking about fruit.
When it is unclear, ask. And keep suggestive fruit out of work chats and family groups.
